Southcoast Health to open urgent care center
Southcoast Health will open its third urgent care center at the end of the month, shifting traffic from its Wareham and Fairhaven sites to Dartmouth.
The nonprofit’s newest urgent care center at 435 State Road will be open for public use starting January 31.
While Southcoast Health’s other centers are not overrun, the centers’ popularity has initiated the 4,200-square foot Dartmouth facility, said officials.
“[The centers] are strategically placed throughout our service area. This is [Southcoast Health’s] first hospital in Dartmouth. It fills a need in that town,” said spokesman Peter Cohenno.
The new center will be modeled after its sister locations. The urgent care center will be for non-emergency visits — including flu and cough symptoms, immunizations, burns, cuts and castings, rashes, X-rays and CT scans — and will include online check-in.
“Patients are looking for convenience,” said Cohenno, explaining the need for clinics that treat minor illnesses and injuries. Following an online check-in, patients will receive a text message when they’re 20 minutes out from an opening, he said. Patients can visit southcoast.org/urgentcare.
Additionally, there will be kiosks — similar to those in the Wareham and Fairhaven locations — through which walk-in patients can put their name in a queue. Cohenno explained that the centers’ locations in shopping centers — the Dartmouth center is located in the Hannoush plaza, and also across from the Starbucks — helps ease wait times.
The nonprofit spent just over $1 million for the facility’s buildout and equipment. On site will be a combination of physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, along with paramedics, certified medical assistants, radiology techs, and registration staff, said Cohenno.
While the volume of each will vary depending on patient volume, Cohenno said there will be doctors on staff at all times.
The Southcoast Health system also includes Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Tobey Hospital in Wareham, and Southcoast Behavioral Health in Dartmouth (which treats mental and behavioral health disorders).
Hawthorn Medical Associates also has an urgent care facility in town, located at 531 Faunce Corner Road.
