Spartan Cup concludes with Norwell win over Stang

Feb 17, 2019

Norwell took home the Spartan Cup on Feb. 16 after beating Bishop Stang 2-1. Dartmouth beat St. Joseph Prep 4-3 in the consolation game.

The 14th annual tournament comes close to the end of the regular hockey season, as both Dartmouth High School and Bishop Stang have secured spots in the postseason.

Dartmouth and St. Joseph’s faced off at 2 p.m. for the consolation match. Dartmouth lost to Bishop Stang 6-3 in the first round of the tournament on Feb. 13. St. Joseph’s had lost to Norwell 7-1

Dartmouth’s Saturday win brought the team’s record to 11-6-3.

“It was a win,” said Head Coach Mike Cappello. “I thought we had a strong first period, but we struggled a little bit in the second period just making plays, and in the third period we were kind of penalty ridden. So overall we didn’t get three full periods of hockey.”

The first goal was scored by senior Bryce Souza. Senior Murphy LePage scored twice, and junior Angelo Nicolosi scored once.

Cappello also noted goalkeeper Charlie Gamache’s strong performance with 24 saves.

“[He had] a strong game, made some big saves when we needed them,” Cappello said. “Especially late, killing all those penalties.”

Bishop Stang faced Norwell at 4 p.m. for the championship game.

Norwell scored once in the first period and once in the second, with Stang’s only goal in the third period.

“We had our big rivalry game with Dartmouth on Wednesday,” Head Coach Ken Gouveia said. “We had a packed house. As usual, it was a really good game: two to two into the third period and then we pulled away.”

That game ended 6-3.

“I thought tonight [we had] a little Dartmouth game hangover early on, which is usually the case,” Gouveia said, noting that the first period was not as good as he would have liked. “Against a team like Norwell that’s so good, you’ve got to play a full 45 minutes and I think we only got thirty tonight the way we would like to play,” Gouveia said. Norwell has won its last 12 games.

Stang’s goal was scored by senior Bobby Jedrey with an assist from freshman Nick Howarth, both of Dartmouth. Freshman goalie Matt Dore, also of Dartmouth, had 23 saves.

Gouveia noted the strong performance during Wednesday’s game by the seniors: Caleb Ikkela, Chris Mullen, Bobby Jedrey, and Dallas Babineau.

With regular seasons concluded, teams are now awaiting the release of playoff schedules, which will be announced on Feb. 23.
