Bishop Stang student Jared Watson pulled out his computer, and began airing homemade beats in front of a 70-person crowd.

The senior’s electronic remix of M83’s “Midnight City” was his first performance at the school’s bi-annual Open Mic Night on May 18, but other demonstrations included original poetry, stand-up comedy, and balloon animal creations.

Watson, who has been composing original music for a while and posts his compositions on his YouTube channel, felt his medium was underrepresented at the show.

“There’s not a lot of electronic music at these events. I thought it’d be really cool to make it a part of [Open Mic Night],” he said. “Using a computer is an easy way to do it.”

Fellow senior Owen Murray provided vocals for Watson’s music.

Twenty-eight students showed off their talents at the final Open Mic Night of the school year, making it one of the biggest in the 10-year tradition, said Advisor Ann O’Leary.

“It’s not a formal concert. It’s more of a coffeehouse setting,” O’Leary said. “It’s the most diverse too,” she added.

Adding to that diversity was junior Mariela Coholan, a member of the school’s improv group. Joined by other members of the group, she pretended to be at a presidential news briefing to address the fictitious requirement that seniors had to forego their day off and attend school on Friday. She navigated the imaginary crisis based on questions asked by audience members.

“I always have trouble with that skit, so I was surprised I got it,” she said after the skit had ended.

“If you have plenty of useless information in your head, you’d be great at improv,’” Coholan said, recalling inspiration from a teacher that sparked her involvement with improv in the fourth grade.
