Summer concert series ends
September is here, and it’s come time to say goodbye to summer. For local music lovers, there was no better way to conclude the season than with one last summer concert.
On Sept. 2, the 16th Annual Concert Series at Apponagansett Park came to a close with the last show of the summer.
For more than a decade and a half, Apponagansett Park has been a go-to spot for live music, food, ice cream and refreshments.
Beginning on June 10, for just $5 per person and kids’ entry for free, the whole family could enjoy local bands like Studio Two, Backroads Band, Metropolis and many more every Wednesday night at a venue that overlooks Apponagansett Bay.
The last night of the concert series was packed from start to finish. The late afternoon was comfortably cool and the sunset inspired plenty of Instagram photos. Smatterings of kids tearing through crowds while playing games of tag were par for the course while younger children enjoyed the park’s playgrounds.
Locals like Bonnie Brow, Pat Wilkinson and Carmen Motha said there was no better place to be.
“I live right down the street, so I just walked right on over,” Motha said, adding that the convenient location left no question about how she’d be spending her night.
“You know, I’ve been coming here for years. It’s just so much fun. The music is always great, you make new friends, it’s just a good time,” says Motha.
The Annual Concert Series has been a staple of Brow’s summer as well.
“I’ve definitely been to a lot of [shows] this summer,” said Brow.
As long as weather wasn’t inclement, Brow was certain to return to the Park every Wednesday to support the local acts.
“It’s just a good place to be,” said Wilkinson. “Good music. Good food. Good people.”
Giving the summer of 2015 its grand send-off was Murphy’s Law. The band is a high-energy four-piece fronted by bassist and lead vocalist Tim McKenna.
Concert-goers enjoyed the best of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and other covers of the biggest names in classic rock.
Also on stage were vocalist and keyboardist Tony Moniz, Mike Murphy on lead guitar and vocals, and Kevin Madeira on drums.
Murphy’s Law is known to play in New Bedford and Rhode Island frequently, so fans will have more opportunities to catch one of their shows even after the season ends.
Tim Lancaster, the director of Parks and Recreation, said the summer concert series was well attended this year, and the number of beach-goers went up this year as well.
The Bucket will remain open through Labor Day Weekend and will likely stay open the week after Labor Day.
