Superintendent reviews goals halfway through school year
New STEM programs, curriculum mapping, and a facelift of Dartmouth Public Schools' website are several initiatives Superintendent Bonny Gifford touted in her mid-year review.
At the January 30 School Committee meeting, Gifford provided an update on the district's progress in implementing her goals. Among them, develop guidelines on classroom instructor feedback, improve mathematics education, and implement her three-year strategic plan which focuses on teaching and learning, access and equity, and community engagement.
Under classroom instruction, Gifford highlighted her work with improving educator evaluation. A district leadership team has been assembled, and the district is studying “Leverage Leadership,” a book by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo.
Enhancements to the K-12 math program continue. The district plans to partner with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Kaput Center for Research and Innovation to develop a professional development plan. The district is also studying mathematics program data, including assessment results and comparisons between other districts. Co-taught classes have also been established, and a year-long algebra program was added to the high school.
Under the teaching and learning objective, Gifford continues to work with educators in curriculum mapping. The mapped curriculum will eventually allow staff to ensure it aligns vertically and horizontally – meaning the curriculum is consistent across classes and properly prepares students for the next grade level. Digital literacy standards are also being developed.
Gifford said schools are also implementing K-12 STEM programs, including the recently implemented iSTEM before-school clubs at elementary schools. The clubs encourage problem-solving through themed science, technology, engineering and math activities. Elementary schools have been supplied with weather stations, and the Hour of Code program, which encourages students to learn computer programming, expanded this year.
“I think we’re happy with what is happening here, especially with the iSTEM clubs,” Gifford said. “They are big hits, and it’s incredible to see kids so engaged.”
Under access and equity, Gifford is focused on revamping technology access in schools. The district has strengthened its network infrastructure, and carefully tracks its technology equipment, making upgrades easier.
Under community engagement, Gifford touted the district’s increased partnerships with community organizations. The YMCA runs enrichment programs in several schools, and the district collaborates with Healthy Dartmouth and COPE for health and drug awareness programs. The district’s Facebook page is more active than ever, and a revamped website is in the works, with an expected launch at the beginning of the next school year.
