Theodore ‘Ted’ Smith Ingalls, 85
Nov 22, 2024
Theodore “Ted” Smith Ingalls, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday night, November 17, 2024 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Boston, Ted was the son of the late Dr. Theodore Hunt Ingalls (d. 1987) and Mary (Smith) Ingalls (d. 2001). He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth “Betsy” Jansen (d. 2015) and is survived by his sister Mary Waddell.
Ted attended the St. Mark’s School and later graduated from Harvard University in 1961, where he played winger on the Harvard hockey team. Following his undergraduate studies, Ted served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962–64. He then continued his graduate studies at the Wharton School of Business, earning his MBA.
Ted would build a remarkable career at the Acushnet Company (Titleist), dedicating more than two decades to that organization. From his role as Vice President of International Sales to his tenure as President of Acushnet Canada, Ted’s leadership left an indelible mark on the business and his colleagues. His military and professional careers also took him to countless countries in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Ted’s happiest moments were spent in the company of his family. He married his wife Donna (Burtchaell) in 1977, and the couple built a life together in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where they raised their two sons, Matthew and Benjamin (wife Lindsay). Following Ted’s retirement in 2001, the couple embraced life as snowbirds at the Verandah Golf Community in Fort Myers, Florida.
Ted lived a life marked by loyalty, humor, and dedication to those he loved. He took immense pride in his four grandchildren, teaching them how to swim and ride bicycles. In addition to his wife, two sons, and their families in Connecticut and Dubai, Ted is survived his stepson, Jeff Miller.
In lieu of a service, the family will hold a celebration of Ted’s life this summer to honor his memory and the beautiful moments that he shared with those he loved. Arrangements are with the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For directions and guestbook, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
