Have fun at the fair.

The Dartmouth Grange’s annual Rural Community Fair will take place on Friday, September 7, from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, September 8 from noon to 9 p.m. at their 1133 Fisher Road location in Russells Mills. The fair, which is free to enter, will feature live animals, a giant penny sale, demonstrations, judged exhibits, and a pie-eating contest.

Shop for a cause.

The Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group, popularly known as DDAWG, will hold a yard sale at St. Mary's Church at 783 Dartmouth St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The proceeds will go to building their permanent dog park. Their 2019 calendar will also be available for sale.

Clean up with the band.

Support the Dartmouth High School Marching Band and Color Guard at their car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dartmouth Middle School, 366 Slocum Rd. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance from any band or guard member, or upon arrival at the Middle School.

Take a walk in the woods.

The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust will host a walk through Destruction Brook Woods during the Dartmouth Grange Fair. Land Steward Leah Howard will lead the walk. The walk will be in the woods, but meet at the grange, 1133 Fisher Rd., at 11 a.m. to join.

Count butterflies.

Come to the Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, 1280 Horseneck Rd., at 10 a.m. to learn about and help count butterflies. Butterfly lovers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to help census as many areas of the sanctuary as possible in groups led by members of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club. Come back in time.

From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., “Come back in time” at the Historical and Arts Society at 1205 Russells Mills Rd. There will be demonstrations of fire pit cooking with authentic 18th century tools, 18th through 20th century surveyor’s tools with Palmer Headley, the Spinners with Soule, and coinage and currency from 1871 to 1914 displayed by the Coin Club of Greater New Bedford. Visitors will also be able to learn how to do laundry using a wash tub, scrub board, and wringer.

Sunday, September 9

Take a walk with other women.

The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust is hosting a women-only walk through Smith Farm, 355 Smith Neck Rd., from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The walk, led by the land trust's land steward Leah Howard, is designed for women who would like some company on the trail.

Stroll at Ocean View Farm Reserve.

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Buzzards Bay Coalition and Southcoast Health are hosting a morning walk at the Dartmouth Natural Resource Trust’s new Ocean View Farm Reserve at 28 Allens Neck Rd. Sunday Strolls are lead by a Southcoast Health Medical Professional and a Buzzards Bay Coalition outdoor educator who will teach ramblers how to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle and explore the outdoors. Tuesday, September 11

Participate in a Day of Caring.

Join the United Way of Greater New Bedford at the YMCA’s Sharing the Harvest Community Farm at 276 Gulf Rd. in honor of September 11. Volunteers will perform a number of tasks to harvest the fall crops, 100 percent of which are donated to hunger relief programs. Sign up to volunteer from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at www.volunteersouthcoast.org.
