Town awarded $400,000 grant to fix Hawthorn Street area

More construction is scheduled for Dartmouth, but this project won't start until 2018.

Town officials announced at the July 17 Select Board meeting that the town was awarded a $400,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant to go toward the Hawthorn Street culvert project.

The project was initiated through the town's Hazard Mitigation Plan development. Hawthorn Street was deemed a hazard due to prior flooding, as well as the threat of potential flooding in the future, said Town Administrator David Cressman.

The monies will allow the town to both replace the culvert and repave the street, which is an added benefit, said Cressman. The $448,000 project will be completed by April 1, 2019, with additional funding coming from the Department of Public Works, he said.

"There's a light at the end of the tunnel, and at least it's not a train," said Selectman Shawn McDonald, referring to the continuous construction.

Faunce Corner Road construction will be completed by the Hawthorn Street project's start date, officials said.
