Town creates 'mock crash' film ahead of prom season
Ahead of prom season, town officials and students worked to create an impactful public service announcement about both distracted driving, and drinking and driving.
Detective Kyle Costa, Youth Advocate Jen Cabral, and Dartmouth Community Television's Michael Moniz presented the video at the May 8 Select Board meeting, and received an emotional response.
"This is every parent's nightmare," said Selectman Shawn McDonald. He urged the creators to get the video out on Facebook.
The video begins as students drive to prom, taking selfies and drinking in the car. A crash leads to a few deaths, emergency responders, and ends with the teens crying out sentiments like, "It wasn't supposed to end this way."
Moniz said the clip was DCTV's second largest production. Big Wheel offered three trucks of the scenario, prom dresses were used, and the fire departments also got involved, he said.
We have over five hours of video just to produce a two-minute PSA, said Moniz.
Costa said years ago, the schools would bring students to a crash setup on Hawthorn Street to talk about drinking and driving, but that is no longer a practical exercise.
"We thought we'd reach a broader audience with video," said Costa.
Bishop Stang will have all its students watch the video, and the public high school and middle school are trying to work it into their curriculum, said Cabral.
Costa said the undertaking was done completely on a volunteer basis.
Following the presentation, the Select Board recognized Moniz for his work in producing viral videos alongside the Dartmouth Police Department. Videos include the 2016 "creepy clown craze" PSA and the 2015 Grinch arrest holiday video.
