Town serves up intro youth tennis lessons
At the beginning of the summer, Emily Jung struggled to keep up during family tennis matches.
That’s why the seven year old enrolled in the town's seven-week Fun on the Court program, managed by the Parks and Recreation Department. The program serves as an introduction to tennis for the six kids between the ages of 6 and 9 who are enrolled.
“It’s mainly to get kids interested in the sport at a young age,” explained Megan Anderson, who coaches the program.
Participants meet four times a week at Dartmouth High, where Anderson teaches fundamentals like forehand and backhand strokes and serving technique. Anderson said that above skill, she aims to keep the program entertaining in order to grow kids’ interest in tennis.
With one week left in the program, Jung agreed that while her skills have improved vastly, she’s still learning.
“It’s really hard to hit the ball sometimes,” she said. “Sometimes I’d hit the ball too high or low.”
The Recreation Department runs several other sports introductory programs, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and golf. Visit town.dartmouth.ma.us for more information.
