Two-time defending champs fall at Ladies Fourball
It had to end somewhere.
After winning the Country Club of New Bedford’s annual Fourball Tournament two years in a row, Kim DeRossi-Walecka and Rosemary Zehntner fell to Denise Belanger and JoAnn Squillante three and two (three holes with two to play) on Wednesday.
The two groups played each other for the third year in a row, with DeRossi-Walecka and Zehntner taking the last two matches.
“It was familiar territory for us," said DeRossi-Walecka of their opponents. "[Zehntner] and I played well, but our opponents played better. Denise was even par after 11 holes. She'd played beautiful golf.”
DeRossi-Walecka started off the match with a birdie to win the first hole, but Belanger followed that up with a birdie of her own on the second hole to even the match.
DeRossi-Walecka and Zehntner fell behind on the third hole, then went two down after Belanger birdied the par 3 seventh hole.
The defending champs were able to cut the lead to one after winning the par 4 13th hole, but DeRossi-Walecka three-putted on the 15th hole to bogey and go three holes down with three to play. The groups tied the 16th hole to end the match.
“It was a solid match,” said DeRossi-Walecka. “We had a good run. Even the best player in the world doesn't win every time.
