UMass Dartmouth Black History 4 Seasons hold Unity Fest carnival

Apr 19, 2016

Hosted by UMass Dartmouth's Black History 4 Seasons Council, Unity Fest on Thursday, April 14, was a celebration of culture and education that aimed to bring people together and strengthen the UMass community.

It appeared to have done just that: Almost every campus organization was present.

The Campus Center was filled with games, prizes, food, crafts, and activities representing a range of different cultures. Nearly 20 different student organizations, including cultural clubs, sororities, and fraternities, got involved with their own booths and activities.

Attendees got to participate in games such as Carrom, an Indian board game that can be likened to pool played with chess pieces, and "Island Ping Pong," which was hosted by the Cape Verdean Student Association.

Food, cultural music and dancing, a photo booth, and giveaways all peppered the event. All attendees were given a card with a "bingo map" of each station. Once the entire card was filled, attendees earned a Unity Fest t-shirt.

Artist Brad Turgeon of FUN Enterprises offered intricate henna designs to those inclined to decorate their skin. Used in ancient India, henna paste, once dried, leaves an orange or brown tattoo which can last up to two weeks, Turgeon said.

The event was attended by everyone from UMass students and faculty to local student enrichment programs.
