UMass Dartmouth denies film request
Officials at UMass Dartmouth have declined a request from CBS Films to film scenes on campus for the film “Patriots Day,” a film about the Boston Marathon bombing.
"After discussing the situation with students, staff, faculty, and other university stakeholders, we have decided to decline the request of CBS Films to use UMass Dartmouth as a site for filming Patriots Day. We have concluded that the production activities would be too disruptive to our campus community,” Acting Chancellor Gerry Kavanaugh wrote in a statement.
The film crew had first reached out to the university earlier this year.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, set off bombs near the finish line during the 2013 Boston Marathon, killing 3 civilians and injuring more than 250 others. Dzhokhar was a student at UMass Dartmouth from September 2011 to April 2013.
Kavanaugh wrote that he is hopeful that “the movie does justice to the many courageous victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy and their families, as well as the public safety officers who demonstrated such selfless dedication to their duty."
Last week, officials in Watertown also denied CBS Films’ request to film a scene in Watertown.
