UMass Dartmouth sorority fundraises for The Women’s Center
Mellow music could be heard throughout the sleepy UMass Dartmouth quad on Sunday afternoon as students had some fun at the annual Carnival for a Cause.
Held by the sorority Iota Delta Nu, 100 percent of the proceeds go towards The Women’s Center in New Bedford.
According to Iota Delta Nu member Alissa Souza, the UMass chapter is the one of its kind. Iota Delta Nu is dedicated to “prevention of violence against women,” and so they chose to support The Women’s Center due to their work in helping and empowering battered women on the South Coast.
Arlinda Ribeiro and Marisol Soto, two representatives for The Women’s Center, were also present at the event. Serving victims of violence, abuse and trauma, The Women’s Center implements a number of free programs to help women escape and recover from domestic abuse and sexual assault, as well as legal advocacy and community outreach programs.
The sorority has been affiliated with The Women’s Center for several years and it has raised about $3,000 since their affiliation began, Souza said. Last year, Carnival for a Cause raised $1,000 for the center, Souza said. The sorority was created in 2007 and began its affiliation soon after its inception.
Games like rubber duck fishing, a golf course, Frisbee, beanbag and ring tosses, and balloon-popping littered the quad, as well as a bake sale and a raffle with 15 locally donated prizes. A charming kissing booth was set up where whoever guessed the number of Hershey kisses in the jar would win it. Even Domino’s Pizza was present for all the hungry college students looking for a quick lunch.
According to Erin Nastar, businesses throughout Dartmouth pitched in to help out with donations to ensure that all proceeds would go to The Women’s Center.
