Update: Driver in custody after pursuit on I-195
A Fall River man attempting to elude police did not get far following a short pursuit on Interstate 195 and Reed Road on May 5.
Jovan Rivers, 31, of Fall River, was driving a 2000 Mercury Marquis sedan eastbound on I-195 — near the Reed Road exit — when Massachusetts State Police pulled him over around 9:05 a.m., according to police. Rivers allegedly drove away after refusing to provide his license and registration, the police said via written statement.
The vehicle exited I-195 and headed south on Reed Road with the trooper in chase. The trooper found the sedan south of the Route 6 intersection, crashed into a 2009 Toyota Corolla and a utility pole, according to police.
The driver of the Corolla, a 69-year-old Westport woman, told state police she was not injured, and refused treatment at the scene. EMS was called to respond as a precaution.
Rivers is charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, impeded operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, and refusing to identify himself. He was transported to the Massachusetts State Police Dartmouth barracks, and later transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for a medical examination, according to the statement.
Rivers will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court at a later date.
