A man suspected of starting a fire in a South Dartmouth home was arrested at the Connecticut border after an hours-long chase on Wednesday, April 13.

Ian Grant, 36, of Dartmouth was taken into custody around 2 p.m. after an hour-long standoff with police in North Stonington, Conn.

Connecticut State Police said firearms were found inside the vehicle.

The pursuit began at around 11:30 a.m. on I-195 in Westport, where Massachusetts State Police were searching for a white Toyota Tacoma truck, the state police announced via Twitter.

According to state police, Grant approached the troopers and then  drove into the median to strike their cruisers and continued to flee west on the eastbound side of I-195 into oncoming traffic.

Grant then made his way across the state border to Jamestown and continued into Charlestown and Westerly. During that time, Rhode Island State Police said the Dartmouth resident pointed an assault rifle out his truck’s window.

Shortly after, the Grant entered Connecticut where he was arrested following a standoff.

Officers had attempted to stop Grant because he was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant out of New Bedford District Court for assault and intimidation of a witness. It is also believed he intentionally set fire to his residence located at 111 Prospect St. in Dartmouth.

Crews were dispatched at 5:45 a.m. for a reported structure fire and found flames engulfing the home upon their arrival.

No occupants were inside the home at the time, according to Fire District No.1 Chief Peter Andrade.

Andrade added that the fire was under control within 20 minutes and that crews remained on scene to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, Dartmouth Fire District No. 1, and Dartmouth Police.
