Warning sign: Officials remind that ads are banned along town-owned roads

The Select Board is reminding residents and businesses that it is illegal to place commercial advertisements directly next to public right-of-ways.

The reminder comes after the board’s vice chair, Stanley Mickelson, said he saw around eight signs from out-of-town mosquito removal companies on town-owned land along Gulf Road.

Signs were also spotted along Route 6.

“You’re putting it on our property,” he said at the board’s April 11 meeting. “We don’t look kindly on this at all.”

According to the town bylaws, “no person shall in any manner affix any bill, placard or poster nor paint, draw or write any words, figures or devices upon any property in the town bordering on the highway on land not his own without the permission of the owner.”

Mickelson said those who violated the law will soon receive calls and letters from the town’s enforcement officer.

“The next time you do it, you’re going to be fined,” he added. “This isn’t Las Vegas — don’t do it in our town, please.”
