Aubrey helps some customers while dressed up for the holiday. What better way to spend a crisp autumn night than walking around Padanaram and enjoying a drink? Residents got the chance during the fifth annual October Sip and Stroll on Friday, Oct. 23 to enjoy a glass of wine and local businesses.
“People like to have a little glass of wine after work, do a little shopping and socialize,” said Natalie Sine, the owner of Padanaram Outfitters, who organized the Sip and Stroll. “It’s a combination of everything.”
Almost every shop stayed open from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. to welcome the crowds of guests. Many of the shops offered snacks along with a variety of wines and ciders to keep people warm.
“We all need a little community, neighborhood, togetherness,” said Margaret Silvia, the owner of Details and Design, “It’s important to people. So we all participate.”
There were scarecrows scattered around the village to compete in the first scarecrow contest, also hosted by Sine. There were four categories; most creative, best of village, kid friendly and scariest.
No two scarecrows were the same; most were wearing merchandise from the store that created them while others had Halloween style costumes.
As residents sipped and shopped, they also had the chance to vote in the scarecrow contest. The votes will be counted and announced later in the week.
The Sip and Stroll offered more than just a drink and late-day shopping. Padanaram Outfitters offered a free mystery ornament with purchase, the Dartmouth Cultural Center had a kids craft available so kids could make a paper pumpkin to take home.
Two businesses decided to do some good during the Sip and Stroll. Folia held a bra drive, collecting bras to donate to Walt’s Mobile Closet. The Knotty Knit started their fall charity project during the Sip and Stroll. Until Saturday, Oct. 31 they will be collecting donations for the Humane Society Southcoast. Those who are donated are entered into a drawing to win three private knitting classes to learn how to knit socks.
The village will reconvene for Halloween when kids will get some treats and parade down the road.
“The summer people have all gone, and now we’re back into our … village mood,” said Sine.
