Wernick Farm to open June 18

Jun 13, 2016

The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust (DNRT) will open its newest reserve, “Wernick Farm,” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18.

DNRT staff will lead one-hour guided walks on the property after a ribbon cutting ceremony and refreshments. Parking for this event will be off-site at Copicut Farms at 11 Copicut Road in Dartmouth. Shuttle vans will operate between the two properties from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wernick Farm's 62 acres include a variety of habitats that connect the present to the agricultural past of the property, with remnant agricultural fields, a series of three spring-fed ponds once used for irrigation, and glacial features.

DNRT purchased the farm in 2014 from Reva Newfield and her four children, who wanted to preserve it for the public to enjoy. The farm had been owned by Reva’s parents, Norman and Charlotte Wernick, since 1956. The blueberry bushes and other significant features still found on the farm were started by the Wernicks, who were dedicated caretakers of the land.

Monies from the Dartmouth Community Preservation Fund and the Bafflin Foundation, as well as the support of 72 individuals and families, helped DNRT protect the property. With the help of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, the project also received a key grant from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.

Wernick Farm will be open during daylight hours only. For more information about the property and a full list of DNRT’s rules and regulations, visit dnrt.org.
