Parking plan approved for Route 6 restaurant/retail location
A new restaurant could be coming to the corner of Maine Avenue and Route 6, with a retail location to boot.
Despite some opposition from a neighbor, on Monday night the Planning Board approved an amended parking plan for a 6,000-square-foot mixed-use site with a proposed use as both a small, 36-seat restaurant and a 3,400-square-foot retail location.
The neighbor, Alfred Medeiros, said he’d lived down the street for 41 years, and he objected to allowing the project to go forward without moving a pole on the corner of what he said is a 23-foot-wide Maine Avenue. He said traffic traveling west on Route 6 often has to come to a stop if there’s a car attempting to enter Route 6 via Maine Ave.
“It’s a disaster,” said Medeiros. “That’s my only concern. I know they’re not going to move the telephone pole. I’m going to have to deal with that problem. It is very dangerous when you’re looking to your left.”
Steve Gioiosa, an engineer with SITEC on behalf of applicant SAMC Realty Trust, said that the town’s traffic safety officer had approved the site as is.
“If the pole could be moved four or five feet east, it would make a big difference,” said Gioiosa, "but we can’t control what the power company and what the other utility companies could do.”
Despite Medeiros' opposition, the Planning Board unanimously approved the parking plan, with a stipulation that the applicant make a request with Eversource Energy to move the pole away from the Maine Ave. That also included notifying the owner of Mike’s Auto 2, whose property the pole lies on, of the request.
“We can amend the request to include something that the applicant has approached power company . . .” said board Chair Joel Avila. “But we certainly can’t mandate the pole be moved or the applicant pay for it.”
