Jake Hill and the Fretters to play 'Kids Show' at Alderbrook Farm

Singer-songwriter Jake Hill’s material often involves content that’s more on the mature side, but about three years ago, he got a grant to make a children’s album, and that’s what he did.

“It got me feeling like a kid again, which I guess I feel like half the time,” said Hill, who’s been writing music and performing all over the Northeast and the rest of the country for over 10 years. “I feel like a 90-year-old man the other half.”

After recording “All the Voices in the Forest,” Hill got the chance to get out and play for some children, and he enjoyed the experience.

“At first, it was pretty intimidating,” he said. “But all they want to do is jump and run around in a circle, and that’s awesome.”

On August 28, Jake Hill and the Fretters will perform a free “Kids Show” at Alderbrook Farm at 2 p.m. Hill will be joined by fellow singer-songwriter Allyson Harple, whose mother-in-law Caren helped to organize the event.

Hill, who is from Plymouth, said the album and the set include both originals he came up with as well as some classic children’s songs like “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” and “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain.”

“Some kids absolutely love it,” he said. “It’s their favorite CD and that blows my mind.”

Always a writer, Hill said expanding into the children’s genre has helped him grow.

“It’s good to have a different avenue,” he said. “That’s part of being a songwriter. And it’s fun writing kids songs."

Caren Harple said she’s looking forward to getting out on Alderbrook Farm, which specializes in providing locally grown produce and encourages public involvement with its animals.

“It’s such a great thing,” she said. “The kids are mesmerized. The parents are happy. Everybody’s dancing. And joining that with this small local farm that's all about being open and having families and kids free to roam around and look at the animals — it’s a good combination.”

Jake Hill and the Fretters, which also includes some of Hill’s bandmates from his other ventures based on their availability, will also perform at the Dartmouth Grange’s Rural Community Fair in September.

Alderbrook Farm is located at 1213 Russells Mills Road.
