March events at Allens Neck Wildlife Reserve
Allens Neck Wildlife Reserve will be holding several events throughout March.
On Saturday, March 12, there will be a Woodcock Dance at Stone Barn Farm, 786 Horseneck Road, which will run from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Attendees can watch the courtship ritual of the American Woodcock. Admission is $6 for Mass Audubon members and $8 non-members.
On Thursday, March 17, is the St. Patrick's Day Woodcock Walk at the field station at 1280 Horseneck Road in Westport. Attendees will see the "sky dance" courtship of the American Woodcock from the Quansett Trail. The event will run from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Admission is $6 for Mass Audubon members and $8 non-members.
On Friday, March 25, will be the Family Vernal Pool Workshop and Full Moon Hike. The hike will start at Stone Barn Farm. After the first warm days in spring, vernal pools fill with water and amphibians, their eggs, and other interesting organisms. Participants are recommended to wear rubber boots and bring a flashlight. This program is rain or shine and will run from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Admission is $6 for Mass Audubon members and $8 non-members.
On Saturday, March 26, the Coastal Waterbird Volunteer Work Day will be held at field station from 9 a.m. to noon. Join Mass Audubon’s Coastal Waterbird Team as they erect fencing that is used to symbolically fence off areas where piping plovers and American oystercatchers nest. The fencing helps protect fragile nesting sites from beach-goers. Bring water, snacks and your own lunch and join us for a picnic lunch after we work.
