Select Board candidate John Haran
Candidate John Haran said his main goal, if elected, would be to bring transparency to the Select Board.
The current Finance Committee member said how town leaders executed the latest round of ambulance contract negotiations wasn’t handled in the best possible manner.
“The ambulance contract was worked out in executive session without input from the residents,” Haran said. “It effects every citizen in town.”
A lifelong Dartmouth resident, Haran has deep ties with the town. He lives with his wife in the home his parents built in the 1950s. He has an extensive career in local government, having served on the Planning Board, the Prudential Committee Fire District 1, the Charter Commission and as a Town Meeting member.
In his job as a sector manager for XIII Northeast Sector, Inc. Haran oversees commercial fishing permits issued by the federal government for vessels working on the East Coast.
In addition to bringing transparency to the board, Haran said he wants members to focus on finances. As a Finance Committee member, he learned that town budgets will be in jeopardy soon.
“The Select Board told us months ago that future revenue will be diminished,” he said. “All town departments will have to take that into consideration. We have an obligation to the taxpayers.”
Haran added that he would like to ensure that town revenues are well spent by supporting public safety, capital equipment and local roads.
“I’ve done a lot a service in town and I think I would make a good addition to the board,” he said.
