Reed Road bridge renamed to honor firefighter

Oct 4, 2016

Faced with a request to install a plaque on a bridge to honor late Dartmouth firefighter Philip Emond, Select Board members voted to take it one step further and rename the entire bridge in his honor.

Emond served as a firefighter for Dartmouth District No. 3. He retired in 2006, and passed away as a result of a long illness on July 19.

Currently, a makeshift memorial featuring a fishing pole and a wreath rests on a Reed Road bridge, the first on the road when heading north from Route 6. Emond enjoyed fishing, according to his obituary.

Late last month, the Select Board considered the request to install a plaque on that bridge. On Monday, the board voted to move forward with both the plaque installation and renaming the bridge. The Department of Public Works will handle the process.
