5 Halloween safety tips from the Dartmouth Police Department
Halloween is fast approaching, and with all the witches and werewolves lurking in the deep, dark night, it's important to be alert. Here’s a few tricks and treats from the Dartmouth Police Department for keeping safe this Halloween.
1. Travel in a group and with an adult.
Strength comes in numbers, said Detective Kyle Costa. It’s better for kids to travel in a group with adult supervision so that trick-or-treaters aren't wondering the streets alone.
2. Look out for suspicious candy.
Costa advises kids and their parents to keep an eye out for candy that is not wrapped or looks suspicious, and to dispose of it if there are any concerns. “There’s always going to be another piece to take its place,” Costa said.
3. Carry a flashlight, whistle, and cell phone.
Trick-or-treating is a nighttime tradition, so it’s important to remain visible to motor vehicle traffic. Costa also recommends wearing an article of reflective clothing for extra visibility. A whistle and cell phone could come in handy in the event of an emergency.
4. Respect property and privacy.
Not everyone celebrates Halloween, so Costa suggests avoiding houses that do not have any lights on, and move on to the next one that does.
5. Have fun.
Lastly, Halloween is a night to enjoy candy, costumes, and trick-or-treating, so it's important to have plenty of fun, Costa said.
