Eversource customers hit by power outage after Christmas

A power outage on December 26 left nearly 3,000 customers with no electricity, including the Dartmouth Mall.

Equipment failure at a power substation on Cross Road left approximately 2,800 customers without power around 7 a.m., said Eversource spokesman Mike Durand. Within three minutes of the initial outage, the energy company rerouted electricity away from the substation, restoring power to 2,300 of the affected customers, said Durand.

Crews examined power lines to determine if damage had led to the failure, but finding none, concluded the issue was likely transient in nature, said Durand.

“Generally that means it was either a tree branch or possibly a critter. There was no permanent damage to the line,” he said.

Affected areas included the entire Dartmouth Mall, but about half the shopping center regained power only a few minutes after the initial loss, said Durand. Power was fully restored to all affected customers by 9:30 a.m., Durand said.

Traffic lights in the area around the mall were also affected by the outage, said Police Detective Kyle Costa. Officers were directing traffic at several intersections – including the intersection with Route 6 and Faunce Corner Mall Road – from 7:30 until about 9 a.m., Costa said.

Costa said no incidents occurred, and traffic was light. He suspected many had the Monday after Christmas off, and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth students are currently out on winter break.

It was not immediately clear if the outage affected mall operations.
