Five arrested in disturbance involving firearms
A disturbance at Thai Taste II led to the arrest of three New Bedford men, one Fairhaven man, and one minor, and the confiscation of illegal firearms on February 16.
Police responded to the restaurant, located at 634 State Road, at approximately 11:58 p.m. after a third-party reported a fight involving firearms, said Detective Kyle Costa.
"It was a fight between two groups of people. There are gang affiliations," said Costa via phone.
Upon investigating, the responding officers found 18-year-old Charros Diondre of Fairhaven, 18-year-old Daejhon Gomes of New Bedford, 20-year-old Charles Lopes of New Bedford, 21-year-old Shazan Gilmette of New Bedford, and a 17 year old (unidentified by police because he is underage) inside a 1998 Lexus on Woodside Street, said police.
The five were arrested, and police confiscated three firearms — a stainless steel Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver with defaced serial numbers, an EKOL Jackal Dual 9mm pistol, and a stolen Jennings .22 caliber pistol — and a large capacity magazine, according to court documents.
All five originally denied knowing who the firearms belonged to and that the firearms were in the vehicle, according to court documents. Lopes later admitted to possessing the stolen .22 caliber pistol, according to court documents.
"We deal with guns, drugs, and violence all the time, and it's getting worse," Costa added.
The individuals were all charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; carrying an unloaded, large-capacity firearm on a way; carrying a firearm without a license; possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number; assault with a dangerous weapon; receiving stolen property; and possession of a large-capacity feeding device during the commission of a felony, said Costa.
There were no reported injuries, he added. No further information is currently available.
