Boy scouts seek monies for camping equipment, trailer
Dartmouth Boy Scout Troop No. 74 is seeking funding for camping equipment, a storage trailer, and a week-long summer expedition in July.
Due to recent growth — nine graduating Cub Scouts this past year, and an expected eight more next year — the 21-member Boy Scout pack needs about $6,000 to provide tents and cooking supplies for upcoming scouts, and to help fund its annual, week-long summer trip.
Adult leader Douglas D'Atri explained that the troop tries to supply the equipment to make the campouts accessible for all its members. Usually, families are only responsible for supplying sleeping bags, he said.
The money would also help fund a 8-by-10-foot storage trailer, which is needed because the troop can no longer store its equipment at the Smith Mills Congregational Church where it meets weekly.
"We've never had a trailer. We had the idea that we could consolidate the equipment and keep costs down," said D'Atri.
The North Dartmouth troop's next campout is April 28-30 at Camp Cachalot in Myles Standish State Forest. There, the boys, aged 11-18, will practice their survival skills. It's one of the troop's monthly weekend trips.
"They sleep in the tents all weekend. They do the cooking. They look at nature," said D'Atri, who has both a 14-year-old son and a 16-year-old son in the program.
The fundraiser is also aimed at supporting the troop's week-long July trip to Camp Yawgoog in Rockville. The troop has also done a bowl-a-thon fundraiser and candy sales to help support the trip, said troop leader Nelson Amaral.
Donations can be made at the troop's Go Fund Me page, www.gofundme.com. Credit, debit, and Paypal are accepted.
