Go green through discounted rain barrel program

Apr 24, 2017

Residents interested in saving on their water bills can start collecting rainwater through a discounted rain barrel purchase program.

Through a partnership with the Buzzards Bay Action Committee and the Town of Acushnet, residents of Dartmouth can purchase a 60-gallon rain collection barrel from The Great American Rain Barrel Company for a discounted price. Normally $119, the barrels are offered to residents for $69.

Barrels can be connected to household downspouts. According to a press release, a barrel can collect 620 gallons of water per inch of rainfall on a 1,000-square foot surface. The region receives about 16 inches of rain from May 1-September 30.

To order a barrel, visit greatamericanrainbarrel.com, click on "Community Programs" and select "Acushnet - BBAC" from the drop-down list of community programs. Barrels must be ordered by May 13. Pick-up is scheduled for May 20 from 9-11 a.m. at the Acushnet DPW Recycling Center, 700 Middle Road in Acushnet.
