Rotary Club names new president

Jun 2, 2017

The Dartmouth Rotary Club’s newest president has only been a member of the group for under a year, but she already has big plans.

At the organization’s June 1 dinner, Jane Carreiro was officially sworn in as president of the Dartmouth chapter. She joined the Rotary Club last August, inspired after hearing about the work the group does from family friend and fellow member Charles Murphy.

She aims to increase membership, especially among women, and plans to work with more outside communities and organizations on service projects.

Carreiro replaces outgoing President Cyndi Marland, who has served in that position since joining in 2015. Even with a tight schedule managing close to two dozen different committees on top of Dartmouth Community Television, Marland learned that the group was in need of a leader, and was accepted into the position.

Her proudest accomplishment in her two-year tenure was expanding the Rotary’s reach in public schools. Working closely with fellow member Terri Hamm, the organization hosted new events for students, including chess tournaments, sponsoring a career day at Dartmouth High School, and revamped its scholarship program.

“We used to just give scholarships to middle school students, but now we actually have them do a composition on what service means to them,” Marland said.
