Meet-and-greet marks opening of new dog park
Dog owners rejoice. There’s a new place to bring your pooch to play.
The Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group (DDAWG) officially opened a temporary dog park at an informal meet-and-greet on June 13. Located in an area of the Dartmouth Regional Park and Trails site on Old Fall River Road, it includes a quarter-acre fenced-in area for dogs to roam free and play.
It’s an important milestone for the group, which was formed in 2009 with the goal of bringing an off-leash dog park to Dartmouth. Relying entirely on its own fundraising efforts, the group has proposed an even larger, 12-acre site within the same property. But it’s been an uphill battle as the site required extensive work.
The group selected a location for the site in 2012, and most recently completed tree removal of the site. DDAWG is now working with the town to apply for grant funding for an overhaul of the facility, which will include necessary additions like electricity and running water, said DDAWG President Diane Camacho.
In the meantime, the park that opened on June 13 is only temporary. It was only last year that board members secured a location for it after approaching the Building Committee with the idea.
“We asked [the committee] since it’s taking us so long to acquire funds for the main park, is there anywhere we could have a smaller park,” Camacho said.
Fundraising efforts are ongoing. The group’s next fundraiser is a wine tasting on June 25 at Dartmouth’s Coastal Vineyard.
It can be accessed at the 443 Old Fall River Road site. Parking is available at the first parking area upon entering the park. It is open to everyone during regular park hours.
