Cushman students bid farewell to preschool

Jun 17, 2017

No one is too young to don a graduation cap and walk across the aisle. That includes Cushman School’s soon-to-be kindergarteners.

To signify their passing from preschool to the start of their K-12 education, outgoing preschoolers at the Cushman School performed songs, accepted diplomas, and enjoyed the comradery of a real graduation experience in a ceremony on June 16.

It’s a process that closely resembles any traditional graduation ceremony, complete with gowns, hats, and tassels – and a lot of prep work beforehand.

“It’s serious. They’ve been practicing all week for this celebration,” said Principal Melissa McHenry. “”They’re ready to move on and continue their journey.”

It’s also an exciting moment for kids as they prepare to either move on to a new school or continue at Cushman.

“I can’t wait to learn math,” graduating preschooler Rafael Lameiro said. He’ll stay at Cushman for kindergarten.

The ceremony was also bittersweet for the teachers who have taken care of and taught students for up to three years.

“We fit in the curriculum, but we still have a lot of time for fun too,” said Teacher Julie Stenning, who said ‘goodbye’ to several students she’s had for two year.

The June 16 ceremony recognized students from Stenning’s and Mary Ann Lamarre’s classes. The school will also hold graduation ceremonies for students in three other classes on June 19 and 20.

In addition to Cushman, Potter, DeMello, and Quinn fifth graders bid farewell to elementary school at separate events last week. Dartmouth Middle School eighth graders attended their graduation on June 20.
