Resident, friend start clothing line inspired by Mark Twain

Bored with the same-old, same-old fleeces that their Tabor Academy peers were wearing, two students decided to kickstart a Huckleberry-infused clothing line.

Dartmouth resident Austin Franklin and Rhode Islander Sterling Benkhart are the creators of Twain Clothiers, a line inspired by American author Mark Twain.

“I think [Mark Twain is] someone who fully embodies creativity and originality,” said Franklin.

The then roommates — now, 2016 graduates — were inspired in the school’s dining hall, where they counted half a dozen students with the same fleece on. Their next visit to Benkhart’s Newport home included a pit stop at Michael’s craft store.

Producing designs was a no-brainer for the boys, but attaching them to a sweatshirt was a little outside of their skill sets.

“We couldn’t figure out how to sew, so we brought it to a seamstress,” Franklin said. “We wore them to school, and people started coming up to us and asking where we got them.”

Following graduation, the two decided to expand on their craft. Benkhart, now an artist, does the majority of design work for the company. The latest pattern is of a school of blue fish, all swimming in the same direction, with the exception of one red fish swimming against the crowd.

“We try to make our designs embody what we believe in: originality,” Franklin said.

The apparel is manufactured in limited quantities, so customers feel like they have something original, the team said.

The company’s logo is Twain’s silhouette from a photo of him in a big rocking chair, dressed in a white suit and smoking a cigar. Franklin said the photo is an homage to both Twain’s style and his connection to the South Coast, as it was taken in Fairhaven.

Franklin, also a writer, wanted to incorporate that lifestyle into the clothing line. In addition to their latest designs, the Twain Clothier website also has a literature section that features essays, short stories, and poetry written by aspiring writers.

Currently, the clothing is available online at www.TwainClothiers.com, at Kate’s Simple Eats in Marion, and the store Motion, located in Mashpee Commons.
