University observatory to hold open houses

Sep 19, 2017

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Observatory and the Astronomical Society of Southern New England will host open houses at the observatory on three days this fall.

The dates include September 30 at 8 p.m., October 28 at 7:30 p.m., and December 2 at 7 p.m.

During the open house, visitors will be able to view the night sky through the observatory’s 16-inch telescopes. Astronomical society members will also provide other telescopes to use in addition to the main telescope.

Open houses will only take place if the weather permits and skies are clear. Cancellation announcements will be made at around 5 p.m. the day of an open house at meetup.com/ASSNE-MA-RI, and a recorded message can be accessed by calling (508) 999-8715.

The observatory is located in the field to the right of the entrance to the university’s main campus at 285 Old Westport Road. For more information about the observatory, to make a donation, or for sponsor information, contact Professor Alan Hirshfeld at ahirshfeld@umassd.edu or 508-999-8715.
