Bikeway alliance to host trail building workshops

Sep 25, 2017

The South Coast Bikeway Alliance will host workshops on bike trail design and maintenance.

Funded through a state trail building grant, the workshops are intended to train prospective volunteers to assist in building the alliance’s proposed regional system through Dartmouth. The alliance plans a bike path linking Rhode Island to Cape Cold. In Dartmouth, the South Coast Scenic Greenway is slated to run through the northern part of town, along with an additional route from Padanaram to Chase, Lucy Little, and Old Westport Roads.

The first workshop on October 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will cover sustainable trail layout and design. Through classroom and field time, participants will learn what a sustainable trail is, and trail construction techniques.

A workshop on trail stewardship and skills is scheduled for October 28-29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The two-day workshop will focus on trail maintenance, including drainage system design, restoration of damaged trails, and maintenance prioritization.

A third workshop will cover stonework, carpentry in wetlands, or chainsaw safety. A time has not been scheduled, and registration will open in the spring.
