Dartmouth Mall, Walmart receive approval for early Black Friday openings

Black Friday shoppers will be able to hop in lines early this year, as both Walmart and the Dartmouth Mall secured Select Board approval to open early on November 24.

At the September 25 Select Board meeting, the board approved the applications of both Walmart and the Dartmouth Mall to open early for the post-Thanksgiving shopping day with a 4-1 vote. Select Board member Shawn McDonald voted against the proposal.

The Dartmouth Mall will open at 12 a.m. and Walmart will open at 1 a.m., according to the Select Board Office.

The board's vote to approve the Dartmouth Mall's early opening was made even though a required sign-off by Dartmouth Police Acting Chief Brian Levesque was missing from the application, according to Chair Frank Gracie. The acting chief must review and approve the plans for public safety reasons. The mall’s application was approved, but it must be reviewed and signed by the acting chief.

Town Administrator David Cressman said that process has since been completed.

When the Select Board approved Black Friday applications last year, Gracie said the board was looking into limiting how early stores can open when approving applications, but discovered that was not possible.
