Alan Joseph "Skip" Campbell Jr., 70, of Dartmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at home. He was the husband of Katheryn V. (Affonce) Campbell with whom he shared 40 years of marriage.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Alan J. Campbell Sr. and Eloise (Cunha) Campbell, he resided in Dartmouth for the past 40 years.

Mr. Campbell was a graduate of New Bedford High School, received a Bachelor's Degree from U-Mass Dartmouth and a Master's Degree from Assumption College.

He had a successful career as a clinical social worker for the Department of Social Services for 35 years. He also worked at St. Luke's Hospital as a social worker.

Mr. Campbell retired from the United States Armed Services and served during the Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom Wars. He proudly attained the rank of Sergeant Major and was the recipient of several medals including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge with Pistol Bar, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, Sharpshooter 1st Cluster Badge M14, Sharpshooter 1st Cluster Badge M16 Rifle and the Sharpshooter 1st Cluster Badge 45 Cal Pistol. 

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Stephanie Campbell and her companion Darren Emond; and Kimberly Kirby and her husband, Derek, of Dartmouth; two grandchildren, Sloane Love and Paxton Joseph Kirby; and his beloved canine companions. He was predeceased by a brother, John Campbell.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road in Dartmouth. Burial will take place on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 10:45 a.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. The procession to the cemetery will begin at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home or meet directly at the cemetery.
