Dorothy N. Kallevik, 78

Dorothy (Novarro) Kallevik, 78, of Dartmouth passed away on February 16, 2018 at Brookdale Dartmouth Village following a lengthy period of declining health.

She was the wife of John B. Kallevik with whom she shared nearly 47 years of marriage, the widow of John A. North and the daughter of the late Edward R. and Bertina (Cerrud) Novarro.

Born in the Republic of Panama, she emigrated to New Bedford in 1958 and resided in Dartmouth since 1975 where she was a parishioner of St. Julie Billiart Church.

Mrs. Kallevik earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the former Southeastern Massachusetts University and was employed as a teacher at New Bedford High School for 23 years. She later worked as an Assessment Counselor at Bristol County House of Correction.

Prior to teaching, Dorothy was a social worker at the Regina Pacis Center in New Bedford. She also helped establish the first Spanish-speaking library located in the South End of New Bedford, and she was an active member of the local Hispanic community, including being the first member of the archdiocese of Fall River (second in MA) to be named to the National Committee of the Campaign for Human Development, an anti- poverty funding agency of the National Council of Catholic Bishops.

Mrs. Kallevik was fluent in three languages, a talented painter, avid gardener, and also enjoyed traveling and sewing.

Her family includes her husband; her daughter, Grace (North) Prescott and her husband, Dennis of Tampa, FL; her sons, Erik Kallevik and his wife, Emma-Kate of Wakefield, MA and Jeffrey Kallevik and his wife, Michelle of Dartmouth; 4 brothers, Edward Novak of Swansea, William Novarro, George Novarro and Dr. Nelson Novarro, all of Panama; 2 sisters, Elisa Baldwin of Union, So. Carolina and Jasmine Pierrelas Bustos of Panama; 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Dennis, Jr., Dylan, Margeaux, Meredith and Myles; and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late John A. North, Jr.

Visiting hours are Friday, February 23, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Her funeral will be Saturday, February 24, 2018, with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in St. Julie Billiart Church at 9 a.m. A private interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
