School district to hold meeting on school security

Feb 27, 2018

Dartmouth Public Schools, in conjunction with other town boards, will be holding a forum regarding school safety on March 7.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at Dartmouth High School. This discussion has been in the works for some time, according to superintendent Bonny Gifford.

At the forum audience members will learn about what safety precautions the district has already implemented. This includes locking mechanism on doors and security cameras. Board members will also give and in-depth explanation of what ALICE training entails. ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate.

Also being talked about will be upcoming protocols including practice drills for both the high school and middle school.

Gifford said this is a “community issue not just a school issue.”

Although the meeting has been in the works for some time, Gifford said recent incidents at the high school give new focus to what will be addressed.
