The YMCA's Sharing the Harvest Community Farm is getting a boost of financial support from the Dartmouth Friends of the Elderly.

The non-profit organization which supports programming and events at the Council on Aging donated $1,500 to the farm, located at the site of the YMCA's 276 Gulf Road center.

Maria Connor, the president of the Dartmouth Friends of the Elderly, along with  Council on Aging Activities Director Nancy Miller, presented YMCA Farm Director Dan King and Maia Shwartz, the YMCA’s director, with the check on June 25.

The donation will be used to support the farm, which donates all the fruit and vegetables it grows to the Council on Aging and other local hunger relief groups.

“The seniors get these wonderful fresh veggies they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford,” Connor said. “They get so excited. They just revel in it.”

Dan King agreed, noting that affording good, fresh food is hard, especially for those living on a low or fixed income. King expressed his gratitude.

“Without donors like you guys, this place wouldn’t exist," he said.

The farm donated 94,260 pounds of fruits and vegetables to South Coast organizations last year, along with 28,500 eggs.
