Stang beats Dartmouth in first round of Holiday Hockey Tournament

Dec 18, 2018

Dartmouth High and Bishop Stang battled it out on the ice in a close game for the Holiday Hockey Tournament.

The Spartans won the game 3-2 after a thrilling final period in which Dartmouth’s Damien Medeiros and Murphy LePage scored the team’s two goals.

“Certainly the score shows a tight game but I thought they outplayed us, beat us to the puck throughout the game,” said Dartmouth Head Coach Mike Cappello. “They seemed to be one step ahead of us and we didn’t really pick things up until late in the third.”

“The team’s been a pleasant surprise because it’s a young group, and we never thought we’d get out of the gate 3 and 0 coming into this game,” said Head Coach Ken Gouveia.

Gouveia said that the team came into the game a little off-kilter as the captain, leading scorer, and a defensive player were all out, disrupting their line-up.

“For us to come out tonight and just compete like we did- it was a great game, they’re a good team,” Gouveia said. “We were very fortunate to come out on top.”

Ryan Martin of Marion scored two of Stang’s three goals. Devin Allen of Westport scored the last goal.

Gouveia also noted the excellent work by goalie Matt Dore, a freshman from Dartmouth, who made 30 saves throughout the game. Dartmouth outshot Stang 32 to 20.

“I told them I thought that was maybe the finest team effort since I’ve been here at Stang,” said Gouveia.

Earlier in the day, Barrington beat Apponequet. Dartmouth and Apponequet will face off at 4:30 on Dec. 20 at the Hetland Arena in New Bedford, followed by a match between Bishop Stang and Barrington at 6:30.
