YMCA gets kids active for Healthy Kids Day

Participants at the Dartmouth YMCA’s healthy kids day enjoyed a raft of activities including lawn games, bouncy houses, bracelet making, and scaling the climbing wall.

The high-energy activities were a sample of what’s on offer this year at Camp Metacomet, the annual summer camp run by the YMCA.

Camp Director Eddie Rouxinol was a counselor at the Dartmouth camp for five years before becoming director at the Wareham branch — but now he’s back. “[I’m] coming home,” he said with a grin.

Rouxinol said the event was going well. “It’s a good opportunity for kids to just get out and get a little taste of summer camp, and prepare for the best summer ever,” he commented.

“[I] wish it was a little warmer, but it’s very fun,” said mother Holly Silva-Reis. “[The kids are] having a great time,” she laughed, adding “They did some crafts, and we tried the food, which was really really good. And they observed the rock climbing wall.”

The YMCA event also featured a popular bounce house with a slide, free sunflower plants to pot and take home, a farm scavenger hunt, and free food samples from new camp lunch provider Healthy Bites.

Maddie Levesque has been coming to the camp for the past fourteen years — the last two as a counselor. “I love it,” said Levesque. “It’s a good way for kids to meet new people...and a lot of the kids come every year.”
