Learn about America’s pastime

The Friends of the Dartmouth Libraries will be hosting a virtual presentation on Thursday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. about the history of baseball.

Storyteller Anne Barrett will trace the game's social, historical and professional evolution from 19th century "townball" to the formation of the Major Leagues and the sport’s transformation into the nation’s favorite pastime.

This virtual presentation requires pre-registration at www.tinyurl.com/DartmouthBB. Audience members must sign up with an email address to receive a Zoom code.

Car Wash fundraiser for Troop 74

Boy Scouts of Troop 74 Dartmouth will host a car wash fundraiser at the Smith Mills Church on May 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is free, but donations are accepted.

Yard sale at the VFW

The Dartmouth VFW and Auxiliary will be holding a yard sale on May 15 at the VFW at 144 Cross Rd. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be a bake sale and hamburgers, hot dogs and liguica will be grilled up by the Auxiliary cook.

Donations of baked goods for the bake sale would be greatly appreciated.

All are welcome.

Bottle, can collection to support dog park

The Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group, popularly known as DDAWG, will hold a can/plastic bottle collection on Saturday, May 15, from 1 to 2 p.m at the Dartmouth Dog Park at 443 Old Fall River Road.

Organizers have been trying for years to fund a larger, more permanent park that would be located across from the town’s current one.

Most of the money raised currently goes toward maintenance and other expenses at the current park.

Donated cans must be redeemable, cleaned/rinsed, and bagged or boxed.

Learn the history of Portuguese immigration to the South Coast

The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will be hosting a Zoom presentation on Portuguese immigration to the South Coast of Massachusetts on Sunday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

UMass Dartmouth librarian archivist and liaison Sonia Pacheco from the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives will lead the talk.

During the talk she will also provide an overview of the common issues that are faced by genealogists in uncovering their Portuguese ancestors.

All community members and history aficionados are encouraged to register for this event at the DHAS website, dartmouthhas.org/events.html.

Once registered, the user will receive via email all the instructions for participating via Zoom.
