Power outages, flooding as Ida storms through
Strong winds and more than six inches of rain brought power outages, flooding and tree damage to town as the stormy remnants of Ida passed through town overnight.
More than 1,000 Eversource customers had lost power as of 8 a.m., according to the utility company. The power company reported that 1,032 customers, about 6.5 percent of town, were in the dark. Within about an hour, the number of outages had been cut in half. By 2:30 p.m., fewer than three outages were reported.
Potter School was briefly without power this morning after a tree fell on power lines, Superintendent of Schools Bonny Gifford reported, causing changes to the school arrival schedule.
“We sent a communication blast to parents letting them know school was in session but the buses would have to use the parent drop off line, not the loop in front of the school,’’ she said.
School remained in session and power was restored by 9 a.m.
Police assisted with traffic at the school.
Class at Bishop Stang was delayed until 9 a.m.
Due to flooding and tree damage, Round Hill Beach and Apponagansett Park will be closed until further notice, according to the town’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Parks and Recreation Department plans to have the sites reopened by the holiday weekend.
Dartmouth police reported that 6.5 inches of rain fell overnight, leading to numerous road closures.
These include 1164 Old Fall River Road; 23 Hill Crest St.; Bourne Place; Rockland Street, which was closed due to downed power lines and Utica Lane.
Police advised caution on Old Westport Road, which was flooded. A tree landed across the road at 1080 Faunce Corner Road, police reported just before 7 a.m.
