Firefighter facing likely suspension following Westport arrest

Nov 1, 2022

A Dartmouth firefighter’s job may be up in smoke following a fiery crash in Westport late last week which flooded a portion of Route 6.

According to Westport Police, officers responded just after 2:30 a.m. for a car that struck a fire hydrant and caught fire on State Road by White’s of Westport.

Upon arrival, Dartmouth resident and District 3 firefighter Tucker Rose was found stuck inside the burning vehicle.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames and get Rose out of the car before the vehicle reignited.

Due to the crash, the fire hydrant ruptured upon impact, flooding the roadway with water and debris. The Fall River Water Department was called in to assist with clearing the flooded roadway, while crews from the state’s Department of Transportation cleared the gravel and dirt.

Police said the officers who rescued Rose reported that he had a smell of alcohol on his breath, his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot.

Officers also reported that Rose had blood and vomit on his sweatshirt.

As a result of the incident, Rose was charged with operating under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

He was transported to St. Luke’s hospital in New Bedford to be treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Rose joined Dartmouth Fire District No. 3 as a call/volunteer firefighter in late 2020.

Chief Richard Arruda could not officially comment on Rose’s status, but noted that protocol is to suspend a firefighter immediately after criminal charges are filed.
