Historical commission to discuss future of old police station July 10

Jul 4, 2023

The Dartmouth Historical Commission will host a public hearing on July 10 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the future of the old police station on Russells Mills Road in South Dartmouth. The hearing will be held in room 315 at the Dartmouth Town Hall.

The old police station on Russells Mills Road, once used as the Town Hall, is slated to be demolished, along with two garage structures to the rear. The reasons given for demolition focus on mold, asbestos, and other contaminants that are known to be within. The purpose of the public hearing on July 10 is to discuss options for rehabilitating and reusing the building or demolishing it and rebuilding or redeveloping the site. The old police station was built in 1926 and was originally Dartmouth’s third town hall.

At a June meeting of the Dartmouth Historical Commission, a unanimous decision was made not to approve the demolition permit for 249 Russells Mills Road because the building is historically significant and no plans were presented by the town for the future development of the site once the building is demolished.

The intent and purpose of the DHC Demolition By-Law is to preserve and protect significant buildings in Dartmouth that constitute or reflect distinctive features of the architectural, cultural, economic, political, or social history of the town, and to limit the detrimental effect of demolition on the character of the town.

The historical commission invites the public to attend.
