‘The best year we’ve had’: 61 kids ‘Get Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs’
With over 60 kids in attendance, the Fr. John Hogan Knights of Columbus Council #14236 had its most successful turnout yet for the 34th annual ‘Get Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs’ derby held Saturday, June 29.
“It was awesome — the best year we’ve had,” said Council member Edward Viveiros, adding how at one point they needed to intervene with the traffic.
Having held the program for the last 35 years since it was started by Bob Mello, Bob Peckham and Kenny Carter, Viveiros said he now sees second generations fishing.
He said he appreciated the support of the property owner Matthew Mello, who allowed the event to be possible following his father, Bob Mello’s, passing last year, as well as the many sponsors who allowed the council to provide tons of supplies, equipment and prizes at no cost to the kids.
Viveiros said their support is “what makes it all happen.”
Boys and girls at the derby were awarded based on the largest fish, the heaviest fish and most fish caught. Viveiros said there were a number of new winners this year, with some being on the younger side.
“It's a priceless thing to see the kids catch the first fish,” he said.
