It’s no trick: Illusionist honored for efforts to fight hunger

NEW BEDFORD — Rain may have been coming down but spirits were high as Lyn Dillies, volunteer director of Dartmouth United Outreach, was honored with the 2024 Global Goals Galvanizer Award on Saturday, July 13.

The award was given out by The Community Collaborative, a New Bedford-based non-profit organization, during a “Global Goals scavenger hunt” that kicked off at the New Bedford Public Library.

Global Goals are a set of prioities established by the U.N. General Assembley in 2015, according to the Collaborative.

Dillies was recognized for her service to Global Goal two — zero hunger.

According to the Community Collaborative, Dillies, also a world-class illusionist, used her touring truck to pick up and deliver food and bread to hundreds of seniors every week when bookings for her magic shows dwindled during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The project quickly expanded to a mobile drive up that helped over 600 individuals, families and seniors every week, according to the collaborative. In 2021, Dartmouth United Outreach merged with the YMCA Southcoast Full Plate Project. Currently, they distribute food to over 1,500 people at each farmer’s market in Dartmouth.

Upon receiving the award, Dillies encouraged the audience to be the ripples which create beautiful waves of good. Then, in true illusionist fashion, she made a dove appear from a balloon.
