SRTA Board extends fare-free service through June 2025

Oct 2, 2024

The Southeastern Regional Transit Authority recently voted to extend fare-free bus and paratransit service through June 2025, according to the Coalition for Social Justice and Bus Riders United.

The SRTA first implemented its free fare in January 2024, which spurred a 35% increase in ridership, the organizations said.

Extending the fare-free bus and paratransit service ensures that transportation remains accessible for low-income residents, the organizations said. It will also facilitate access to healthcare, jobs, education and recreation.

“This is a critical program that has played an important role in providing an accessible means for community members to travel to work, school, spaces of recreation and medical offices,” said Deb Fastino, executive strategist of the Coalition for Social Justice.

Besides assisting lower-income residents, voters supported extending the free fare to support community well-being and provide access to vital resources and services, according to the two organizations.

“It has supported economic revitalization in our communities,” said State Rep. Alan Silvia (D — Fall River). “I see this service as a win for everyone.”
