10 Must-have gifts for your young children
Last-minute gift shopping is in full swing with Christmas around the corner. Dartmouth Week surveyed students for the scoop on which Pokemon cards are which, the must-have tech items, and the best dolls, robots, and stocking stuffers. Here are 10 foolproof gifts for your eight- to ten-year olds.
No. 1. Pokemon cards
Mikey Hutson, 9, owns more than 200 Pokemon cards already, but he’s asked Santa for an EX pack.
“[EX cards] do more damage in battle. They have more health, and the art is just cooler,” explained his classmate, Syrina Nadeau, 9.
Caleb Chavez, 9, also owns about 200 Pokemon cards, but he would like an Evolution pack of the gaming cards.
According to the students, Evolution cards are similar to EX, just older. Mega packs are even better than EX packs, they said. Any of the three versions are a great stocking stuffer.
Bonus: add a collector’s binder.
No. 2. Hoverboards
Hoverboards were popular picks across genders, and they’re nothing like what you’d see in Back to the Future: Part II.
“It’s like a segway with no pole,” explained fourth grader Nill Fogarty.
However, be aware that hoverboards have raised concern among both parents and government officials. They’re prone to combustion, due to an overheating lithium-ion battery.
“Everyone wants a hoverboard, even though they explode,” explained Nadeau, who is opting for a new tablet.
No. 3. Xbox One S
The newest version of the Xbox is a must-have among students, along with new games.
"I just got a new Xbox One S," said Thomas Quinn, 10, listing a slimmer appearance and more technology as pros. Now, he's asking for NBA and hockey games to go with his console.
No. 4. Polaroid Camera
“I like taking pictures, and I like to have pictures of my family in my room,” said Mairwen Sylvia, 9. Polaroids are known for their instant prints.
No. 5. Wireless Beats
The newest model of Beats by Dr. Dre, a wireless headphone system, is a hot item among Dartmouth elementary school students, like Fogarty, who likes to listen to music on his iPad.
No. 6. Hatchimals
"It comes in an egg and it hatches," explained Brooke Santo, 8. The animal mashups — for example, pengualas and burtles — each have their own personalities, and come in a decent sized egg.
No. 7. PopSockets
They’re fashionable suction cups that expand and collapse. Most commonly applied to phones, they can act as a stand, grip, or earphone wrap, but they can also be used as hooks and knobs around the house.
“It sticks onto your phone so you can take pictures, video, whatever you want really,” explained Sylvia.
No. 8. American Girl Dolls
Nine-year-old Grace Hughes asked for the Lea Clark American Girl Doll. The dolls come accompanied by a book with the character’s story. Each character comes from a different cultural background and/or time period, and can be supplemented with various accessories, outfits, and sets (much like a Barbie doll).
No. 9. Terra Climber
Ten-year-old Luke Nelson asked for a Terra Climber.
"It's like this robotic, scorpion thing," he explained. The Tyco toy is radio controlled, and can scale stairs and hills.
No. 10. Puppies
Yes, the real thing. Ten-year-old Natalie Murphy asked for a puppy, although she failed to mention which breed, color, or level of fluffiness would best fit her wish list.
